Advance your career with English tests offered by the British Council, the global experts in English language teaching, learning and testing.

In today’s global landscape, English proficiency is a key driver of career advancement and educational opportunities. Governments worldwide are investing in cost-effective, and internationally recognised English testing solutions to support educators, students, and professionals. With over 90 years of experience in English learning, teaching and assessment, the British Council offers policy-aligned CEFR assessments, which enable career acceleration and scholarship opportunities for teachers in Thailand.

CEFR and why it is important

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is a globally recognised framework for describing proficiency levels in any language at 6 distinct levels: A1 and A2 (Basic user); B1 and B2 (Independent user); and C1 and C2 (Proficient user).

It has been adopted and endorsed by the Ministry of Education Thailand, the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), and the Teacher Council of Thailand (TCT) to set standards in English language education because it accurately describes what people can actually do in terms of real-world communication skills.

The CEFR was preferred because it can also inform and enhance teaching and learning, placing more emphasis on communicative teaching methods, skills development, and clear learning outcomes.

Aptis for Teachers, one of the few tests that was developed from the CEFR specifically for educators and not simply mapped afterwards, has been approved by OBEC and the TCT for pre-service teachers and teachers in service.  Rigorously researched, independently validated and recognised by educational institutions and ministries around the world, Aptis for Teachers is not only a relevant, practical and reliable CEFR test, it is the test that teaches. By preparing for Aptis, teachers will be gaining insight into the CEFR too.

Our English assessments for Teachers

The British Council offers two distinct options for teachers to demonstrate their English proficiency, depending on their needs and ambitions: Aptis for Teachers or IELTS.

Both tests are accepted by OBEC and TCT for career aspirations within Thailand. In addition, IELTS remains the world’s most trusted and recognised English test for study abroad and immigration purposes.

Our English assessment solutions will support teacher promotions by helping reduce career level progression from 4 years to 3 years for those with CEFR B2 scores and above.

Description

Aptis for Teachers is used by Ministries of Education and educational institutions around the world to test the English skills of teachers, or students in teacher training programmes.

Aptis for Teachers contains tasks and questions which relate to the scenarios that teachers encounter every day. This enables test takers to focus solely on the actual language being tested.

IELTS is accepted by over 12,500 organisations in over 140 countries. It is the most trusted English test in the world for global mobility in study and immigration, and the gold standard in English proficiency testing.

We offer flexibility to choose the test that suits your needs. IELTS Academic is suited to those who will be entering a higher learning environment where the medium of instruction is English, whereas IELTS General Training focuses on a test taker’s proficiency in a practical, everyday context where the language of work or training is in English.

Teachers in Thailand can choose to take either IELTS on Computer or IELTS on Paper delivered in our wide network of official IELTS test centres across Thailand.
