About this course

This course is designed for children in Kindergarten 3 (and Kindergarten 2 in our Chiang Mai centre) who are between the ages of 5 - 6. Our main focus is to build strong foundations in English communication, language and literacy using fun, friendly and effective approaches.

On this course your child will

  • learn pronunciation and literacy using Jolly Phonics
  • enjoy learning English through games, puzzles, songs and other activities
  • listen to carefully chosen story books to help encourage language and literacy development
  • have fun and learn in a highly supportive atmosphere

We offer 40-hour courses each academic year, as well as special courses during the summer.

Course content

British Council’s Kindergarten course use a variety of teaching materials and classroom activities to encourage language and literacy development through enjoyable and valuable learning experiences.

Jolly Phonics programme

Jolly Phonics is a fun and effective approach to teaching literacy to young children. It is a multi-sensory, synthetic phonics programme that teaches children the English alphabetic code in a simple, but structured way. The result? Children will be able to read and write from an early age!

Children will be taught the 42 main letter-sound correspondences. Each new letter sound is introduced with a story and an action. Both the stories and the actions keep the children actively involved and help them to concentrate and remember the letter sounds efficiently. They will also learn how to blend the sounds together to make new words.  Such methodology will enable children to naturally develop reading and writing skills in a shorter time frame.

Parent's involvement

How will I learn about my child's progress?

Our professional teachers help monitor your child's progress throughout the course using a number of assessment tasks. They will counsel you on your child's progress during the course, and at the end of the course your child will recieve a certificate and an individual recommendation for further study.

  • Parent Orientation Days - An introduction to the British Council's approach, to our teachers, and our young learner lessons. Parents will get to meet a member of the Young Learner team and the Customer Services team and will have the opportunity to ask questions.
  • Parent Workshops - Workshops on how you as a parent can help your children to learn English at home. Suggested activities and material will be provided by our Young Learner team.
  • Parents' Days - Your chance to meet the teacher and talk to them about your child's progress throughout the term.
